The Shout captures an eerie ethereality like the ammonite unearthed upon the Devonshire shores where it is set. What may seem as ordinary and chipper as a cricket match, soon gives way to a tale of a mysterious wanderer who upends the lives of a sound recordist and his wife by revealing the guttural might of his eponymous sound.  

Having played in competition at Cannes in 1978, The Shout won the coveted Grand Jury Prize that year. Ever since, it has receded into the canon of cult horror classics owed to the way Skolimowski adapts the short story by Robert Graves to be a sparing, unsettling supernatural thriller. The score by Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford of Genesis, enhanced by electronics from Rupert Hine, gives The Shout a sonic signature which cements this as a time capsule of 70s British fear manifest.

Following their first collab with Cultplex showing Radu Jude’s Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, Partisan Cinema is delighted to return with a spooky selection for scream season. The Shout is a lauded but now under-seen and under-sung horror film from Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski whose foray into British cinema began with his 1970 classic Deep End and was bookended by 1982  drama Moonlighting. The Shout encapsulates a roster of then-fresh British talent from British New Wave star Alan Bates to fresh-faced John Hurt and the late, great Tim Curry.
